Character Charts and Cast Lists for readers

These charts are for groups who read an entire play or even just one act in one setting, although you might find other uses for the lists. Keep in mind that every edition of Shakespeare is slightly different and you will find discrepancies between these lists and your book. Please let us know if you find something that needs to change!

The Character Charts are PDFs and show the number of lines in each scene for every character.
The Cast Lists are text files that divide up the parts between a certain number of readers; you can edit these files and add the names of your own readers.

These are the same charts that are on the individual play pages; we just collected them here in one place for convenience.

casting Shakespeare's plays

This book lists all the characters in each scene for both quarto and folio versions, if both exist: Casting Shakespeare's Plays. It's an academic book that studies how the plays might have been cast in Shakespeare's time, using both quarto and folio editions, and is very useful for discovering which characters appear but do not speak in case you are casting it for the stage. (Our charts are easier to use than this book, however, for casting readers.)
